Three people, including a 19-year-old woman, have died after massive crowds gathered in Mexico City to celebrate Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage.

According to city officials, the victims also included a 48-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, all of whom died from suffocation after becoming unconscious in different areas of the city during Tuesday night's celebrations.

Huge Crowds Filled the Streets

The Mexico City Government estimated that more than one million people gathered across the capital following Mexico's historic victory, with the largest crowds assembling around the iconic Angel of Independence monument on Paseo de la Reforma.

The win marked Mexico's first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 1986, prompting thousands of fans to celebrate with fireworks, music, and street parties that continued late into the night.

Emergency Services Responded

The city's health authority said emergency personnel responded to reports of three unconscious individuals at separate locations near the celebration area.

Paramedics performed CPR and other emergency first-aid procedures before transporting all three victims to nearby hospitals. Despite medical efforts, each was later pronounced dead due to suffocation.

Authorities confirmed that the victims were identified by their families.

Mayor Offers Condolences

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed her condolences to the families of the victims and pledged government support during the difficult time.

Following the tragedy, Brugada urged football fans to celebrate responsibly, emphasizing the importance of safety, care, and empathy during large public gatherings.

Earlier in the day, she had already advised supporters planning to watch the match near the Angel of Independence to consider other locations because the area had reached capacity.

Mexico Advances to the Round of 16

Mexico's victory over Ecuador secured a place in the World Cup Round of 16, where the team could face England if England defeats DR Congo.

While the result marked a historic sporting achievement for Mexico, the celebrations were overshadowed by the tragic loss of three lives, prompting renewed attention to crowd safety during major public events.
