CANNES — In a historic upset for commercial film studios, an independent, black-and-white drama filmed on a budget of under $1.5 million won the festival's highest honor—the Golden Ribbon.

The film, 'Echoes of Silence', was written and directed by a first-time filmmaker and features an ensemble of local theater actors.

A Return to Storytelling Over the past decade, global cinema has been dominated by big-budget superhero franchises. 'Echoes of Silence' relies on minimalist cinematography and character-driven dialogue.

"This award proves that audiences are hungry for authentic human stories," the director stated in her acceptance speech. "We made this film with a handheld camera and pure passion."
